Referendum campaign starts as cash worries increase for retirees

By Agencies in Athens, Greece | China Daily | Updated: 2015-07-03 07:53

The battle for Greek votes was in full swing on Thursday ahead of a crucial weekend referendum that could decide whether the country falls out of the eurozone. For Greeks, particularly the elderly, the daily struggle to get cash continued in the face of massive uncertainty.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras urged Greeks to vote "no" on Sunday on bailout proposals after European leaders ruled out any further debt talks until seeing the outcome.

A defiant Tsipras said in a TV address on Wednesday that a "no" vote would strengthen his hand in negotiations with international creditors after six months of tortuous talks have failed to produce a deal.
