Typhoon makes landfall in Hainan

A typhoon made landfall in Wanning, Hainan province, around 6:50 pm on Monday, packing winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, said the Hainan Meteorological Service.

Typhoon Kujira, the eighth typhoon of the year and the first to reach China, formed in the South China Sea on Sunday.

By midnight on Sunday, 23,530 fishing boats had sailed into port in Hainan to shelter from strong winds.
