State premier pledges support for landmark Aboriginal bill

By Xinhua in Melbourne | China Daily | Updated: 2015-06-19 07:50

A landmark bill to recognize the Aboriginal people as the first inhabitants of Western Australia will receive bipartisan support, the state's premier said on Thursday.

If passed, the state's constitution will be amended to recognize the Aboriginal people as the traditional custodians and first inhabitants of the land.

A joint committee was formed to consider the bill after it was introduced in the state parliament late last year, but according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Premier Colin Barnett has offered bipartisan support for it.
