By Zhang Kun in Shanghai | China Daily | Updated: 2015-06-13 07:47

A fundraising dinner brought the US ambassador to China, celebrities and sports stars together with developmentally disabled people in Shanghai on Friday.

The dinner was part of a series of events hosted by Special Olympics East Asia, which promotes equality and inclusion for the developmentally disabled, as well as introducing the upcoming Special Olympics Summer Games, which will take place in Los Angeles from July 25 to Aug 2.

Melodee Hanes, the wife of US Ambassador to China Max Baucus, along with former NBA star Yao Ming and ex-Japanese soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata, were among the 150 participants in the Play Unified Sports event in the morning, when children and developmentally disabled athletes played ping-pong, basketball and soccer with others at the Luwan Gymnasium in Shanghai.
