A moment in time: Planting ideas

Planting trees has become a way to promote awareness of environmental issues. Today, hoists and other types of machinery are used to handle large trees, but in the 1980s, brute force was required. In the photo, taken in Beijing in 1987, workers use their bare hands and a length of rope to lift a heavy tree into position. In the years since then, people - especially children - have been taught about the importance of growing trees and caring for their surroundings. In the photo, taken in 2013, youngsters from Beijing take part in a tree-planting event at Jinshanling in neighboring Hebei province. Their obvious enthusiasm suggests that the environmental message is getting through.
