Hollywood actress Natalie Portman's recent graduation speech at Harvard has gone viral on Chinese social media, sparking conversations about how young people can approach their lives and careers after college. In China, too, the graduate season is a bittersweet one. Laughter is shared, tears are shed and best wishes extended. For most students, this is a time to start their professional careers, while others decide to pursue further studies abroad. Some grab the last college days to have a campus wedding, and a few look for a gap year. Chinese university graduates have also developed their own graduation rituals, which include group photos, dinners and galas. While the academic gown has been the must-have attire for the occasion, it is now being joined by various other styles such as the qipao, Mao suits and robes of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). Some students are also going for more quirky clothes that are fashioned after Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) princesses and "running brides".
