Australian university wins contest

Bond University from Australia won the eighth simulated intellectual property court debate at Beijing Foreign Studies University. The annual contest invites universities from home and abroad to debate simulated patent, trademark and copyright disputes. It is the only event of its kind in China that borrows rules from international court competitions and uses English throughout. This year's contest attracted 11 teams from China and three from overseas.

China, ROK share copyright cases

The 11th Sino-Korea Copyright Seminar, co-hosted by the National Copyright Administration of China and South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was held in Jinan last week. More than 100 delegates representing copyright administrations, companies, agencies and media from both countries shared experiences in revising copyright laws and fighting online piracy. They also talked about policies and management in copyright protection for movies and TV productions.

New policy to boost tech innovation

The municipality aims to become a globally influential tech innovation hub, according to a new policy adopted by the city's top authorities in late May. Increased intellectual properties are the key to achieving the goal, said Han Zheng, Party chief of the city. The new policy addresses the difficulties in commercializing research achievements, gaining access to financial services for tech startups and protecting intellectual property, he said.

Facial recognition ATM unveiled

A Hangzhou-based company unveiled the world's first automatic teller machine with facial recognition last week. The machine connects with the public security authority's database. When a user inserts a bank card into the machine, a camera is activated to compare his or her face with the registered photo of the card owner in the database. If it finds the user is not the real card owner, it will not give out money, even if the password is correct. The machine is the result of joint efforts by the company and Tsinghua University.

Canton Fair fights patent violations

More than 500 complaints were filed at the spring edition of this year's Canton Fair held in Guangzhou from April 15 to May 5, claiming intellectual property right violations, with 74.6 percent of them related to patent infringements. More than half of the IP violation suspects were proved as infringements, a 15.1 percent rise from a year earlier. Liu Jianjun, spokesman of the biannual trade event, said their enhanced IP protection efforts helped increase protection awareness of all stakeholders involved and created a sound transaction environment.

First cross-Straits forum held

The IP authority of Xiamen hosted the first cross-Straits IP economy forum on June 2 at Xiamen University to help promote IP operation in the city, the only pilot region of cross-Straits IP economy development in China. Experts discussed cross-Straits IP policies and economic modes, as well as global IP development at the forum. Taiwan and the mainland will take it in turns hosting the forum in the future.

Annual financing tour launched

Officials from Henan intellectual property office went to a number of counties in the province last week to give lectures to promote IP ledge financing, marking the start of this year's IP ledge promotion campaign. Organized by the office and Bank of China's Henan branch, the annual tour aims to help local small hightech companies seek new approaches to financing. During the past three years, 22 lectures have been given to more than 1,300 people from some 400 companies in the province.

Industrialization policies reap profits

The 1,000 major invention patents in the province led to total output valued at 127.1 billion yuan ($20.5 billion) since the local IP authority began to help promote industrialization of the patents two years ago. Profits and taxes generated by the patents have reached 16 billion yuan. Preferential policies for them include subsidies for keeping patents valid, recommendations for collateral financing and rights protection assistance.
