When gossips mar the public forum

Every year, it seems, a debate flares among China Daily editors and reporters about the word "netizens".

Internet users, that's what they are, says one camp. What need is there for such a silly sounding, made-up word?

The other camp argues every word was made up at some point, and netizen is the only single word that conveys its meaning. Surely, that's worth something.
