Yemen

UN envoy calls for truce extension

The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, called on a Saudi-led military coalition and the country's warring parties to extend by five more days a cease-fire set to expire on Sunday evening. Yemen's Vice-President Khaled Bahah said his administration favored an extension, but it would depend on the situation on the ground. Around 400 Yemeni politicians and tribal leaders have begun talks in Saudi Arabia on the future of their war-torn country, but the Shiite Houthi rebels who control the capital and much of northern Yemen are not participating. On Sunday, intense fighting in Yemen's southern province of Taiz killed at least 20 people.
