Buddhism has long been popular among Chinese people, with many different sects. Buddhist monks in ancient China usually stayed on mountains to study the scripts. Here are four of the most famous Buddhist mountains in China.

1. Wutai Mountain, Shanxi
Wutai Mountain has the longest and most prestigious history of the four well-known Buddhist mountains. The mountain is a cluster of five terracelike peaks; wutai literally means five terraces. The mountain is 3,061 meters above sea level and home to 53 monasteries. Within their walls is a rich legacy of more than 100,000 superb sculptures and paintings, along with a great quantity of Buddhist cultural relics.
