1972

Liu graduated from National Taiwan Normal University and became an art teacher at Taipei Municipal Chenggong High School.

1973

Liu was invited to take part in the Exhibition of Famous Contemporary Artists by the National Museum of History in Taipei.

1978

Liu was invited to the United States to lecture at the recommendation of the Government Information Office of the Taiwan administration and the National Museum of History in Taipei.

1980

Liu became an artist in residence and taught at St. John's University in New York.

1984

He published Ten Thousand Mountains, which took him 13 years to paint and write.

1996

Liu was named "the best-selling author in Taiwan of the past decade" based on a survey conducted by Kingstone Bookstore in Taiwan. His book Look into an Open Life was voted the most influential book of the year.

2000

Liu donated to a New York-based educational charity foundation to build more than 10 primary schools in Sichuan province in memory of his mother.

2012

He sold his work Torrents for 1.38 million yuan ($222,500) and donated the money to Orbis, an international charity organization dedicated to eye diseases.

The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei obtained Liu's work Thunder for its collection.

2013

Liu's paintings officially entered the Chinese mainland art market. A group of five paintings, including Moonlight in the Pine Groves, sold for 1.81 million yuan at an auction in Beijing.

2014

Liu's work Night Blooms sold for HK$1.38 million ($177,991) by Poly Auction Hong Kong.
