This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2015-05-06 07:52

Item from May 6, 1988, in China Daily: Yesterday was a day to remember, the day which saw a number of world firsts. A dozen climbers, five from Japan, four from China and three from Nepal, reached the summit of the 8,848-meter high Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest in the West, to break the former record of sending nine people up to the "roof of the world" in a single day ...

It's also the first time for climbers from different sides of the mountain to meet on the summit, and the first time to telecast live the final assault.

Scaling Qomolangma, the world's highest peak, is the dream of many who want to push themselves to the limit.
