This Day, That Year
Item from April 30, 1989, in China Daily: Foreign business people have been complaining for some time of the many difficulties involved in reaching deals in Beijing ... One of their complaints is the lack of decent office space. But by the end of this year, their problems will be eased with the completion of two multi-functional complexes in east Beijing. One is the China World Trade Center, the largest real estate development to date in China, and the other is the Jing Guang Center, the tallest in Beijing at present.
The country's rapid development in the past few decades has fueled a fever in skyscraper construction, reflecting the optimism from increasing investment, employment opportunities and business prospects.
Beijing itself has witnessed one of the highest increases in the number of tall buildings, especially in recent years.
