3-D presents a grim look, literally

By Raymond Zhou | China Daily | Updated: 2015-04-23 08:29

Hao Jian, a professor with the Beijing Film Academy, recently wrote a controversial article titled Chinese Cinemas Do Not Deserve 3-D Movies.

He argues that movie theaters across the Middle Kingdom habitually scale down the luminance of projection so as to save costs, or are not fully outfitted to show 3-D movies in their intended brightness.

I have heard similar criticisms from US filmmakers about movie theaters in their home country. I also learned that 3-D, even in its right configuration, is supposed to be only one-third as bright as 2-D.
