This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2015-04-22 07:39

Item from April 22, 1995, in China Daily: A gilded-bronze bell, which was hauled off as loot by a British general in 1901 during an invasion of China, was returned to the Temple of Heaven in a ceremony yesterday ...

The bell was one of the musical instruments used in imperial sacrificial rites at the Temple of Heaven in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties ... Chinese scholars say it is one of a 16-piece set. The other 15 are still missing.

"The sight of the bell arouses all kinds of feelings in people's minds," said Jing Changshun, president of the Temple of Heaven.
