Item from April 17, 1992, in China Daily: A contingent of Chinese military engineers boards a chartered plane to Phnom Penh, where it will join the United Nations transitional forces charged with keeping peace in Cambodia. The engineers left Beijing yesterday.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of China's participation in UN peacekeeping missions. The country has deployed 30,178 military, police and civil affairs personnel in 24 operations since 1990, and it has become "an important force in safeguarding world peace", said Li Xiuhua, deputy director of peacekeeping affairs at the Ministry of National Defense.
On April 7, the last batch of 130 troops from China's first infantry battalion of 700 peacekeepers set off from Jinan, Shandong province, for South Sudan.
