Power pylons pile on pressure

By Peng Yining | China Daily | Updated: 2015-04-13 07:33

A report by the State Forestry Administration of China shows high-voltage power lines and roads are putting a strain on panda habitats in the southwest.

Anzihe Nature Reserve and the animals' movements between nearby protection zones are affected by 319 hydropower stations, 1,339 km of roads and 268 km of power lines, according to the report, released in February.

Chen Fengxue, deputy director of the administration, said many reserves have shrunk as local authorities have developed mining industries and tourism.
