A moment in time: The story of how we buy books

Chinese bookworms are proving their interest in books hasn't changed much from the early 1980s to these fast-changing days, when computers and smartphones dominate people's spare time. Back in the '80s, booksellers were photographed selling on the street, where pedestrians would stop to browse and perhaps buy a book or two, as shown in the picture above from 1981. As bookstores grew bigger and improved their facilities for visitors, readers to the Xidan Bookstore Building in downtown Beijing could enjoy more comfort while reading, as in the picture on the right, taken in 2006. In the meantime, bookstores have become places for reading, not just selling, as more and more people buy their books from the Internet.
