Item from April 10, 1997, in China Daily: Famous sculptor Li Weisi from Xiamen University examines a statue of Lin Zexu, a Chinese national hero known for burning smuggled narcotics in the 19th century. Lin was also a major advocate of fighting against Western invaders.

The 8-meter-high statue, which was made with funds from Chinese people living in the US, will be presented to New York City as a gift in July.

Lin's statue was completed in Xiamen, Fujian province, on April 6. It is the sixth such statue made by Professor Li.
