Albinos fear renewed attacks

By Agence France-Presse in Dar es Salaam | China Daily | Updated: 2015-04-08 07:03

With limbs hacked off and their babies and children abducted or killed, albinos in Tanzania live in fear of another horrific spate of attacks against them before elections in October.

Albino body parts are boiled up in foul human potions used in witchcraft in the East African nation, and reports of killings have increased as local politicians order up spells in the belief that the expensive brews will secure victory at the polls.

"Local political leaders believe in the power of witch doctors and think that it could help them to win elections," said Vicky Ntetema, director of Under The Same Sun, an organization defending the rights of albinos in Tanzania.
