Hand-rolled cigars emerge in the face of civil war

By Agence France-Presse in Latakia | China Daily | Updated: 2015-03-31 08:14

In Syria's Latakia province, in the northwest region, workers roll the country's first locally made cigars, a new product that's being launched despite the devastating civil war that's in its fifth year.

The workers are employed by Syria's state-run General Tobacco Co, which has decided to branch out into cigars in a bid to create desperately needed jobs and boost revenue.

At the end of February, the company's director-general said the initiative would create some 1,000 new jobs in a country that has seen its economy ravaged by the conflict.
