China Daily | Updated: 2015-03-28 08:10
Interest in sports is spreading across the country as Beijing and Zhangjiakou press ahead with their joint bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. China won its first Olympic gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and has since emerged as one of the world's leading sporting nations. Spectators have been thrilled by the accumulation of medals at international events, while Beijing was widely praised for the way it staged the 2008 Olympics. The public is interested both in learning more about professional sports and making physical exercise a part of daily life. The picture above captures the moment when gymnast Liu Xuan rose like a sparrow during the floor exercise event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Liuw on gold in the balance beam event in Sydney, and her success propelled her to stardom. In the picture on the right, taken last year, a baby imitates Liu's posture in a photo taken by his father 200 days after he was born.
