Smuggling of solid waste triples in 3 years

By Can Gwei in Wu Xi, Jiangsu | China Daily | Updated: 2015-03-20 07:47

Customs authorities uncovered 192,000 tons of solid waste illegally imported from abroad in 2014, which would have posed a danger to the environment, according to the General Administration of Customs.

The figure was more than triple the amount found in the previous year, customs officials said.

Imported solid waste, which is dubbed "foreign garbage", refers to solid waste produced abroad and smuggled into China. The waste included electronic, medical and mineral garbage and would severely pollute water, soil and air, the officials said.
