As China vows to reform its education system as one of the priorities on the government agenda, ensuring that every student enjoys equal rights and resources in receiving an education has attracted public concern. Central and regional educational authorities have made progress to narrow the gaps in resources, funding and faculty development between urban and rural areas. Still, more efforts are needed to guarantee fairness in education as NPC deputies and CPPCC members urged. Comments:

Everyone should be entitled to succeed through an equal education. Henan has a huge population of more than 100 million and more than 2 million enrolled college students, while having a small amount of higher education resources. No universities or research institutes in the province receive direct funding from the central government. It's unfair not to allocate education resources among provinces based on their population size. Every child represents a share of our country's future (no matter where he or she hails from). So I wish universities in Henan could catch up with elite colleges with more policies and financial support from the government to promote educational equality.

Lou Yuangong, CPPCC National Committee member and president of Henan University
