A moment in time: Dedicated followers of fashion

"Fashion show" was an unknown term in the People's Republic of China until Italian-born French fashion designer Pierre Cardin brought a collection of clothes to a catwalk in the Cultural Palace of Nationalities in Beijing in 1979, a year after the country adopted its reform and opening-up policy. The photograph above depicts a fashion show in 1986 when the Golden Water Bridge at Tian'anmen Square was turned into a catwalk, featuring models in fur coats made in Northern Europe. Now China has become one of the world's biggest producers and markets for fashion. Luxury fashion brands fill China's shopping malls, and lavish promotions are staged for new designs. Chinese designs also dazzle on the catwalks of overseas fashion events. The photograph on the right shows a fashion show held in Beijing's 798 Art Zone during the 2013 China Fashion Week.
