Item from March 13, 1995, in China Daily: China's Chen Lu waves to the crowd after receiving her gold medal at the World Figure Skating Championships on Saturday. Chen edged out France's Surya Bonaly.

Chen won her country's first figure skating gold medal on Saturday as she came from behind to snatch the women's singles title... she earned four 5.9s for presentation to hold off the challenge of her French competitor... Chen, the 1994 Olympic bronze medalist, withstood almost unbearable pressure as she found herself skating between overnight leader Nicole Bobek of the US and pre-event favorite Bonaly.

Since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, China's gold medal haul has continued to grow.
