Wuzhong, a city in the northwest of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, is planning to build China's biggest domestic and international industrial zone for buying, processing and selling halal products - foods allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines.
"We have set a high and strict bar to produce halal food and products in the industrial zone, in line with international norms," Bai Shangcheng, the mayor of Wuzhong, said, adding that adoption of high quality standards would aid international trade.
Wuzhong has 726,000 Muslims, 53 percent of the city's total population. Bai himself belongs to the Hui community.
