By Zheng Jinran | China Daily | Updated: 2015-03-03 07:54

As Chai Jing's documentary went viral online on Saturday, an environmental protection hotline mentioned in the film was inundated with calls from concerned residents.

From 8 pm on Saturday evening, just two hours after Under the Dome premiered, callers in the capital flooded the 12369 hotline, a unified, national service set up in 2001.

By 9 am on Monday, the hotline had received 1,456 calls, a rise of 240 percent from the previous weekend, according to statistics provided by the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau.
