Item from Feb 13, 1982, in China Daily: A newly-built double-deck transfer station in Beijing. It is the unction of the two subways in the capital. Beijing now boasts the world's second-longest subway system after the hanghai Metro. With 18 lines and 319 stations, the capital's net-work stretches 527 km.

Last year, about 3.4 billion subway trips were made in the capital, with the daily peak hitting about 1.6 million trips.

Opened in 1969, Beijing Subway is the Chinese mainland's oldest metro system. It had two lines in service before 2002.
