Item from Feb 11, 1998, in China Daily: The latest statistics suggest the number of mobile phone subscribers in the Chinese capital had reached 700,000 by the end of January.

In other words, 6 percent of Beijing's residents have mobile phones. The rate is higher than that of other Chinese provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

The capital witnessed the fastest development of mobile phone services in 1997, with 310,000 subscribers registered in the year.
