Penguin beats odds to survive 21 years

By Xinhua in Sydney | China Daily | Updated: 2015-02-06 07:31

A little penguin that has lived three times the life expectancy of its average species has survived its latest battle.

Pauley, who comes from a closely monitored colony on Phillip Island, off the southern Australian state of Victoria, was recently found undernourished and distressed on a mainland beach.

He was taken to a nearby animal shelter, where he was discovered to have a badly broken beak, which meant he hadn't been able to catch enough fresh fish. As he got weaker, he became slower, making it even harder to catch any fish at all.
