This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2015-01-28 07:38

Item from Jan 28, 1994, in China Daily: Six years ago China launched the "Vegetable Basket Project" to eliminate food shortages by increasing the production of vegetables, fruits, eggs, meat and other foodstuffs. Production has thus far exceeded the project's goals and prevented food shortages in most parts of the country. Abundant supply of goods has also helped stabilize foods prices in urban areas.

The national project to increase food production continues to benefit Chinese consumers, with authorities introducing various ways to improve production methods almost every year.

Self-sufficiency rates in meat, vegetables, poultry, milk and eggs have reached commendable levels. Beijing alone invested 3 billion yuan ($480million) in agriculture from2008 to 2013.
