Washington officials hope Havana agrees to reopen embassies and appoint ambassadors in the coming months

The United States and Cuba began talks on Thursday about restoring diplomatic relations after a difficult session on immigration highlighted the challenges involved in overcoming half a century of hostilities.

The highest level US delegation to Havana in 35 years was due to conclude its two days of meetings on Thursday, and both sides cautioned that an immediate breakthrough was unlikely.
