This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2015-01-23 07:36

Item from Jan 23, 1986, in China Daily: Western classical music has made a comeback in Beijing, with young Beijingers shown elbowing their way through the racks of cassette tapes bearing the names of Beethoven, Chopin and other famous European composers that have been on sale for the past few weeks.

Chinese listeners began getting re-acquainted with Western classical music in the 1980s, but it wasn't till the last decade that most could regularly enjoy various performances in the theaters.

The blossoming musical scene in recent years has also fueled a rise in the number of companies and groups involved in cultural shows.
