Local govts to set coal reduction goals by June

The government has asked four regions including Shanghai and Guangdong to set targets for reducing coal use by the end of June as part of China's efforts to curb pollution. Shanghai and the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang are among the "key regions" where the nation is seeking to cut coal consumption and instead use alternative energies or natural gas, according to a statement issued by the National Development and Reform Commission. By 2017, China plans to reduce coal use in Beijing by 13 million metric tons, the NDRC said. Reduction measures include promoting energy-saving projects and eliminating outdated capacities.
