Elevated spud leaves strange aftertaste

Move over rice - the potato is taking root.

This slightly ominous-sounding headline on the front page of China Daily greeted readers on Friday.

The official reasoning: A program will be put in place to add potatoes to China's list of food staples - now comprising rice, wheat and corn - because the spuds grow in relatively arid regions and grain imports are rising continuously.
