The potato was categorized as a staple crop this week, joining rice, wheat and corn. The move aims to diversify the Chinese menu and meet soaring food demand.

"Potatoes are low in fat and calories, but have high-quality protein. These are what the Chinese people are looking for in a healthy diet."

Dingxi is known as a home of the potato, so the city and farmers like me will benefit from the move. We hope the government will consider this and make long-term plans to avoid unfair competition.
