Richard Roman began his bond with the city of Changchun, capital of Jilin province, when he arrived as a teacher in 2004. He still remembers the cold in early spring when he first walked out of the airport.

But the city has become his warm second home after 10 years. When new arrivals complain about the cold weather, Roman, who is from Britain, will reply:
