China Daily | Updated: 2014-12-17 07:46

A Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday expressed the country's condolences for the two hostages killed in the Sydney cafe siege.

"China opposes any violence against innocent civilians," said spokesman Qin Gang. "We express sincere condolences and deep sympathy to the Australian Government and people and families of the dead and the injured."

The siege ended early on Tuesday morning with three dead, including the lone gunman, as police stormed the cafe.

Police confirmed that two of the 20 hostages who had been held since 9:45 am on Monday were killed and at least four others were injured, one of them a police officer.
