The Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders is to be expanded through the development of the surrounding area.

The improvements will help the hall perform its role as an international commemorative site and the official venue for National Memorial Day activities, officials said.

Luo Haiming, deputy director of the Nanjing urban planning bureau's Hexi branch, said a memorial square will be established, and museums, exhibition halls and gardens will be constructed around the hall.
