Championing safety for more than 100 years

TUV SUD was founded in 1866 as a steam boiler inspection association. The company was set up at a time when steam boilers were used in industrial applications and construction engineering were weak and often exploded, causing fatal accidents.

Operators and companies manufacturing steam boilers decided to take the best engineers and form an association to ensure that the design and manufacturing process could be inspected by an independent body.

Within seven years the accident rate decreased by more than 85 percent and other countries like the United Kingdom and the United States set up similar inspection associations.
