830 Przewalski's gazelles

Przewalski's gazelles, an extremely endangered species, have seen a population increase in Northwest China's Qinghai province, a reserve spokesman said on Sunday. According to the most recent data, at least 830 Przewalski's gazelles live at the reserve set up for the species in Gangca county bordering Qinghai Lake. Their number in the area decreased to about 300 in the mid-1990s. The gazelle, native to China like the famous Tibetan antelope, is the world's most endangered hoofed mammal species. The gazelle was named after a Russian adventurer who collected a specimen and brought it to St. Petersburg in 1875.
