High-speed Rail Special: Experts note need for more domestic train technologies

Chinese railway enterprises need to further develop key technologies in the high-speed railway sector to facilitate their overseas expansion, experts have suggested.

"We have accumulated abundant expertise and experience in planning, constructing and operating high-speed railways, but when it comes to some core technologies, the nation still lags behind Western competitors," said Zhao Jian, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University who specializes in China's railway system.

He explained that though Chinese factories can produce almost all bullet train parts, the key technologies are still licensed from foreign counterparts.
