The city was hit by thick smog on July 26, 1943, after which it started to analyze the causes of smog and took measures that included promoting air pollution control technologies, reducing vehicle emissions and encouraging the use of natural gas and ethanol to replace gasoline.
By the end of the 1980s, the smog in Los Angeles had been brought under control.
