By Hu Yuanyuan and Su Zhou | China Daily | Updated: 2014-10-30 07:51

Real estate tycoon Pan Shiyi and his wife, Zhang Xin, donated $10 million to Yale University on Wednesday, despite a $15 million donation to Harvard in July that aroused debate on the Internet, including criticism that urged the couple to put more into domestic education.

The SOHO China Foundation signed an agreement with Yale University endowing $10 million in "SOHO China Scholarships "to the university. The scholarships are said to "create financial aid for Chinese students to obtain undergraduate education at the world's top universities".

"Every person's potential is like a hidden gem, and education is the tool that unlocks human potential, "Pan, chairman of SOHO China, said in a news release on Wednesday.
