The fate of the ancient Chinese folk music art form Nanyin has ebbed and flowed over the past few decades.
Literally "southern music", Nanyin originated in Fujian province and sung in the local dialect accompanied by Chinese instruments.
In 2006, Nanyin was named a national intangible cultural heritage. Three years later, it was listed among world verbal and intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
