Xinjiang promotes mixed communities

By Cui Jia in Urumqi | China Daily | Updated: 2014-10-20 07:27

The Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has decided to push forward the establishment of mixed communities where people from different ethnic groups will live together. The move aims to improve understanding and eliminate estrangement, the regional government said on Sunday.

The plan to build mixed communities around Xinjiang is a part of the reform of the regional household registration policy.

The reformed policy says that governments can create such communities in public rental, low-rent and resettlement housing areas. Authorities are also encouraged to improve the living environment of mixed residential areas and allocate better education resources nearby.
