King's recovery continues

Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, is continuing his recovery in a hospital following surgery to remove his gallbladder earlier this month, the palace said in a statement on Friday.

Bhumibol's health is a subject of keen public concern.

ARGENTINA

Comsat launched

Argentina launched its first domestically built communications satellite on Thursday. The ARSAT-1 satellite is the first to be constructed with local technology in Latin America. It was built by a crew of about 500 scientists over seven years at a cost of $250 million.

PHILIPPINES

Militants free German hostages

Al Qaida-linked Islamist militants freed two Germans hostage on Friday in the southern Philippines, a rebel spokesman said. The German man and woman were seized in April when their yacht had mechanical problems while sailing from the Philippines to the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah.
