Digital doctors offer tech cure for healthcare woes

By Reuters in Hangzhou | China Daily | Updated: 2014-10-16 08:02

Liu Chunming almost died after a car crash in July in Taihe, a remote county in Jiangxi province, but he survived serious abdominal injuries thanks to specialist doctors who directed his treatment from 1,000 kilometers away.

From a central "operations room" in the eastern city of Hangzhou, doctors diagnosed and led treatment for the 48-year-old using live video feeds and software that shares patient scans and files to aid consultation.

Liu's case reflects the rise of digital healthcare, or eHealth, in China to bridge the chasm between the developed health services in large cities and grassroots rural care.
