Why do earthquakes often occur in Yunnan?

Yunnan is located in the circum-Pacific seismic belt, part of the Eurasian seismic zone. In the 20th century, 23.6 percent of earthquakes over magnitude 7.0 that occurred on the Chinese mainland took place in Yunnan, a province accounting for only 4.1 percent of the nation's land area. A recent strengthening of tectonic movement of the Indian plate has led to frequent earthquakes in Yunnan, observers said.
